DTI backs congressional franchise for Starlink to boost PH internet connectivity
Trade Secretary Cristina Roque has expressed support for granting a congressional franchise to Starlink Internet Services Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of Elon Musk's SpaceX, to enhance internet connectivity across the Philippines.
During a recent meeting with Starlink executives at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, California, Roque discussed the company's expansion plans and the challenges they face, including high spectrum user fees, outdated telecommunications regulations, and import/export issues hindering satellite technology deployment.
Roque emphasized that obtaining a congressional franchise is crucial for improving nationwide connectivity and reiterated the Department of Trade and Industry's commitment to fostering an investment-friendly environment for emerging technologies.
Additionally, Philippine lawmakers today are backing Starlink's entry into the country to improve internet access, especially in remote areas. The House and Senate have proposed measures to grant Starlink temporary and full operating authority, allowing it to use low-Earth orbit satellites for high-speed broadband services.
