Aboitiz Power expands battery storage to boost PH power grid

MANILA, Philippines - Aboitiz Power Corporation has secured financing to enhance its battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Magat and Binga hydroelectric plants, aiming to bolster the reliability of the Philippines' power grid.

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and China Banking Corporation will finance the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS Phase 2 in Isabela, while BPI and BDO Unibank will finance the 40-MW Binga BESS in Benguet wherein, by 2026, both projects are expected to be finished.

These projects build on the successful 2024 launch of a 24-MW Magat BESS by SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP), whose president and CEO, Joseph Yu, stated that the increased energy storage capacity will improve grid stability and make it easier to integrate renewable energy sources.

In addition to the Magat and Binga facilities, SNAP operates the Ambuklao and Maris hydroelectric power plants, contributing to Aboitiz Power's diverse renewable energy portfolio in the Philippines.
