DOST grants 500k to BiSPU for mental health research
MANILA, Philippines - A pioneering research initiative has been launched with a P500,000 grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to Biliran Province State University (BiPSU), an institution that is now one of the trailblazing research quadrants on transformative research.
This funding will provide for a trailblazing research entitled “Psychological Stress, Suicidal Ideation, and Coping Mechanism among Students of Selected Tertiary Academic Institutions in the Region Eastern Visayas. His initiative addresses the rise of mental health issues among students in the area.
The research, headed by Dr. Pearl Irish de Paz in joint efforts with Dr. Willard N. Riveral, and team members, Dr. Jovy Dia R. Saniel, Dr. Niez, and BiPSU president, Dr. Victor Canezo, aims to discover the rates of psychological stress and suicidal ideation to which students are subject.
Also, it hopes to identify effective coping mechanisms that may help institutions improve student mental health support. The project, which is funded through the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), will officially commence this month with the release of funds.
Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, president of BiPSU, said the research could have much impact and is in line with the university’s goal of responding to pressing social needs. “This initiative embodies BiPSU’s commitment to impactful research that addresses issues of real importance. We are committed to advancing solutions to support mental health and student well-being,” he said.
The results of the study should influence programs and policies that enhance mental health services in Eastern Visayas schools. The study offers hope for a better, healthier future for pupils in the area by creating more welcoming and caring learning settings.
