Transport Strike Begins Over Rising Fuel Prices

A nationwide transport strike led by PISTON kicked off on March 19, with jeepney drivers and operators halting operations in protest of surging fuel costs.

The group set up multiple strike centers across Metro Manila and is expected to hold a march in Mendiola the following day.

PISTON president Mody Floranda said the protest aims to pressure the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to suspend fuel taxes, impose a ₱55-per-liter price cap, and approve a ₱5 fare increase for public utility vehicles.

The strike has disrupted transportation in key areas, prompting some schools to suspend in-person classes or shift to online learning.

To maintain order, the Philippine National Police deployed around 180,000 personnel, while authorities and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority rolled out “libreng sakay” rides to assist stranded commuters.
