Marcos Halts Fare Hikes for Public Transport
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the suspension of planned fare hikes for jeeps, buses, and other land transportation modes, citing the need to protect commuters amid rising fuel costs caused by the Iran-Israel conflict. The increases, initially set to take effect on March 19, have now been deferred indefinitely.
In a video statement released Wednesday, March 18, Marcos emphasized the importance of supporting commuters, workers, and students. “We will postpone this because everyone using our transport system needs continued assistance during this situation,” he said.
The President also announced that the government will fast-track fuel subsidies for transport workers and implement free rides nationwide to help ease the burden of soaring oil prices. Commuters on MRT and LRT lines can expect discounted fares, while reductions on toll roads are also in progress.
However, Marcos clarified that airfares are expected to rise, as airlines have been allowed to increase surcharge rates in response to higher fuel costs.
