PNP Heightens Monitoring Ahead of Duterte Arrest Anniversary Rallies
The Philippine National Police has intensified monitoring in several areas following online calls for protest activities marking the first anniversary of the arrest and detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Authorities are particularly watching a planned motorcade rally expected to pass along EDSA, with organizers reportedly planning to end the activity at Villamor Air Base.
PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units have been directed to coordinate with local authorities to maintain public safety during the demonstrations scheduled on March 11.
“We are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local units to ensure public safety,” Nartatez said, adding that while the police respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly, authorities must also ensure that protests do not disrupt normal activities or threaten peace and order.
The PNP chief ordered increased police presence along the motorcade route and other key areas, including Davao City, considered Duterte’s political stronghold, where gatherings are also expected.
Police personnel have been reminded to exercise maximum tolerance while handling protesters.
Nartatez emphasized that officers must uphold professionalism and restraint during the demonstrations.
“Our strength lies in professionalism and restraint. Uphold the law, protect our citizens, and lead by example,” he said.
