House Justice Panel Begins Review of Impeachment Complaints vs. Marcos

The House Committee on Justice is set to begin deliberations on Monday, February 2, to determine whether the impeachment complaints filed against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. meet the required standards of form and substance.

Terry Ridon.

The first impeachment complaint was filed on January 19 by Atty. Andre de Jesus in connection with the alleged kidnapping of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The second complaint was submitted on January 26 by leaders of progressive groups and House members from the Makabayan bloc. It cites alleged betrayal of public trust, including claims of the insertion of P100 billion in the national budget and alleged kickbacks in the flood control program.

“Inuna muna doon ‘yung arrest ni former President Rodrigo Duterte at pagdadala sa kanya sa The Hague to face trial under the International Criminal Court.

Ridon admitted that the impeachment complaints may face difficulty gaining traction in the House.

It does not rise to the culpable violation of the Constitution. It does not rise to betrayal of public trust,” he added.
