DTI eyes global spotlight for Filipino creative industry

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is ramping up efforts to promote Filipino creative talents on the global stage, with a strong push for local films, music, and arts to reach international audiences.

In light of the growing demand for Filipino content overseas, DTI Secretary Cristina Aldeguer-Roque recently met with the Philippine Film Academy to discuss how to position local films in strategic markets. She underlined the necessity of adapting movie choices to the tastes of other nations, noting that South Korea appreciates bold and edgy films, Indonesia favors horror, while other places like romantic comedies or classic teleseryes.

Roque emphasized the significance of working with international streaming platforms and including foreign subtitles to improve accessibility worldwide. DTI intends to incorporate Filipino films into local Netflix counterparts across the globe through its 29 global offices, enabling direct collaborations between Philippine filmmakers and international distributors. This project goes beyond films, with the DTI aiming to promote Filipino singers, independent filmmakers, and visual artists in the international arena.

Beyond the entertainment industry, DTI is also bringing Filipino painters and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to international trade events, ensuring a broader representation of Filipino creativity. “No one gets left behind,” Roque stressed, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting Filipino artists and entrepreneurs in expanding their reach and influence worldwide.
