DENR Prepares for Dry Season, El Niño

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is ramping up measures to manage water supply as the country heads into the dry season and a possible El Niño.

DENR Undersecretary Carlos Primo David said stronger coordination among agencies has helped improve preparedness since the 2023 El Niño, preventing major water disruptions, particularly in Metro Manila.

He noted that contingency plans are already in place should water levels at Angat Dam decline, including coordinated actions across the water sector.

DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna added that emergency protocols, such as cross-border water supply systems, are ready to assist areas that may face shortages.

Despite concerns, officials expressed confidence that the country will avoid major water supply issues this year due to improved coordination and planning.

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau has retired several tropical cyclone names due to their destructive impact, replacing them with new names to be used in future storm seasons.
