Bolstered military security following arrest of alleged Chinese spy

MANILA, Philippines - Following the arrest of a Chinese national and two Filipino accomplices involved in allegedly engaged in espionage, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. ordered further tightening all military camps and installations with security checks on individuals entering every military facility in the country.

The suspects were identified as  Deng Yuanqing a Chinese national along with Filipinos Ronel Jojo Balundo Besa and Jason Amado Fernandez were caught conducting operations in key civilian and military areas using surveillance equipment last January 17 in Makati City.

Yuanqing a software engineer who has ties with the People's Liberation Army University of Science and Technology (PLAUST) in China was reportedly involved in espionage activities targeting strategic locations.

The AFP chief highlighted that they are monitoring surrounding areas along with tighter security within military camps since establishments with suspicious activities, such as Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) sites have been seen near critical military facilities like those under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) raising concerns on potential surveillance activities.
