Middle East on Edge as Israel-Hezbollah Clashes Intensify Amid Iran Conflict

Tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate as Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fresh rounds of fire, while global powers signaled deeper involvement in the widening conflict tied to Iran.

Israeli forces confirmed they had launched strikes across Lebanon following rocket and drone attacks allegedly carried out by Hezbollah.

A military statement said that "in response to Hezbollah's projectile fire toward the State of Israel", Israeli forces had "begun striking targets of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation across Lebanon".

Meanwhile, missile attacks reportedly left at least seven people injured in the Jerusalem area, according to Israeli emergency responders.

The conflict has drawn condemnation from the United States and several Arab allies after Iran allegedly launched attacks on Gulf states hosting American troops.

"The targeting of civilians and of countries not engaged in hostilities is reckless and destabilizing behavior," the US State Department said in a joint statement with Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In Tehran, the Israeli military said it had initiated "large-scale strikes" as part of its ongoing operations against Iranian military infrastructure.

"The Israeli Air Force... has begun an additional wave of strikes against the Iranian terror regime at the heart of Tehran," the military said.

The European Union has warned that a prolonged conflict could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability and maritime trade, announcing plans to reinforce its naval mission in the Red Sea with additional warships.

On the economic front, global shipping giant Maersk has suspended transit through the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz due to security concerns, after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared the key shipping route closed.

US President Donald Trump, for his part, vowed retaliation following the deaths of three American service members during operations tied to the conflict.

He also warned that military operations could stretch for several weeks.

"It's always been a four-week process. We figured it will be four weeks or so," Trump said.

Regional leaders have since vowed to bolster defense measures against further Iranian attacks as the situation continues to unfold.
