Marcos Backs Expansion of Coast Guard Fleet Amid Escoda Shoal Incident
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed support for the acquisition of additional vessels for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG to strengthen the country’s maritime defense and protect national interests in the West Philippine Sea.
Malacañang made the statement following a recent incident near Escoda Shoal involving Chinese vessels. According to the PCG, boats operated by the Chinese Coast Guard and Chinese maritime militia reportedly targeted Filipino fishing boats with water cannons and carried out dangerous blocking maneuvers in the area.
The confrontation occurred within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. Three Filipino fishermen were injured after being hit by high pressure water cannons, suffering bruises and wounds. Two of their fishing boats also sustained damage due to the force of the water blasts.
Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro condemned the incident, stressing that the safety and welfare of Filipino fishermen remain a priority of the President. She also noted that the administration has directed the deployment of forces in strategic locations to monitor the area and ensure protection for local fishermen.
The Palace reiterated that strengthening the PCG, including increasing its fleet, is part of the government’s broader efforts to safeguard Philippine sovereignty and maritime security.
