LTFRB Approves Provincial Bus Fare Hike
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has approved a provisional fare increase for provincial buses as transport costs continue to rise due to higher fuel prices.
Effective March 14, ordinary provincial buses will charge an additional ₱1.00 on base fare and ₱0.30 per succeeding kilometer. Meanwhile, air-conditioned, deluxe, and super deluxe buses will see a ₱0.35 per kilometer increase, while luxury buses will add ₱0.45 per kilometer.
The agency reminded operators to clearly display updated fare guides inside their vehicles and urged passengers to report any overcharging.
LTFRB chair Vigor Mendoza II said fare hikes for jeepneys and city buses are also being finalized, with operators pushing for a ₱2 increase. However, he noted that adjustments must be balanced to avoid putting too much pressure on commuters and inflation.
Relief Measures Eyed for Air Travelers
To offset the impact of rising airfare, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is considering reducing passenger service charges (PSC) in provincial airports by ₱50 to ₱200.
The proposal, which still requires board approval, aims to keep air travel affordable, especially with peak demand expected during the Holy Week.
The Department of Transportation is also exploring ways to limit airfare increases, including lowering airline service fees and speeding up fuel surcharge adjustments through the Civil Aeronautics Board.
Fuel Costs Driving Price Increases
Global oil prices have surged due to tensions in the Middle East, pushing transport costs higher across land, air, and sea travel. Airlines are expected to adjust fuel surcharges, which have remained unchanged for months.
Calls for Additional Support
Amid the fare hikes, lawmakers are urging the government to expand assistance for commuters. Ching Bernos called for the revival of the “Libreng Sakay” program, noting that funds have already been allocated under the government’s service contracting initiative.
With fuel prices continuing to climb, authorities are balancing fare adjustments with relief measures to cushion the impact on both operators and the riding public.
