House Moves to Begin 2026 Impeachment Proceedings vs VP Sara Duterte

The House of Representatives has formally initiated the 2026 impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte after referring four verified complaints to the Committee on Justice.

During the plenary session on Monday, February 23, Deputy Speaker and Iloilo 4th District Rep. Ferjenel Biron announced the referral of the endorsed impeachment complaints to the panel chaired by Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville “Jinky Bitrics” Luistro.

The move marks the official start of the House’s constitutional process in tackling the allegations filed against the Vice President, as the justice committee prepares to examine whether the complaints meet the required standards.

Lawmakers are expected to conduct public hearings in the coming days, where the panel will determine if the complaints are sufficient in form and substance. The outcome of these proceedings will decide whether the impeachment complaints will move forward to the next stage of deliberation.

Under House rules, the committee is tasked with evaluating the legal and factual basis of the complaints before recommending further action to the plenary. The proceedings may include the submission of affidavits and supporting evidence from both complainants and the respondent should the complaints pass initial scrutiny.

The development comes amid ongoing political tensions surrounding the Vice President, as the House undertakes its mandate to review the allegations through the prescribed legislative process.
