Comelec begins ‘Oplan Baklas’
MANILA, Philippines - As the official campaign period for senate and party-list candidates began, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) launched its statewide "Oplan Baklas" operation on Tuesday, focusing on campaign materials that were posted unlawfully.
Local Comelec offices collaborated with partner authorities to enforce election laws during the operation, which began as early as 4 a.m.
About 300 workers were sent out to six districts in Quezon City alone to take down campaign posters that were in violation of the law.
As stated by Atty. John Fajardo, Election Officer for District 5, candidates are only permitted to erect campaign materials in approved locations, and posters must be no larger than two by three feet.
Any items discovered on electricity lines, trees, or in areas designated for public use were removed right away.
Along with other local organizations, the Department of Public Order and Safety in Quezon City spearheaded the removal activities in strategic locations such as Araneta Avenue, Quezon Avenue, and E. Rodriguez.
