Bato to Cendaña: I’m sorry

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Bato dela Rosa recently found himself in the middle of controversy after making fun of the Akbayan Representative Perci Cendaña's facial expression not knowing that the latter is a stroke survivor.

In reaction to Cendaña's condemnation of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment remarks, Dela Rosa posted a social media comment that was not only impolite but also extremely disrespectful to the handicapped community.

Although political debates can frequently be contentious, using personal assaults, particularly those motivated by ignorance, compromises the integrity of public service. Health advocates quickly denounced the senator's remarks, calling on him to sincerely apologize and for the Senate to act appropriately.

Medical and disability rights organizations pointed out the damaging preconceptions that Dela Rosa's comments reinforced, and the pushback against his comments was quick and determined.

They underlined that a public official trivializing the difficulties faced by people with health issues only serves to exacerbate the stigma that these individuals already experience in society.

In addition to calling for responsibility, these advocates emphasized that lawmakers ought to lead the charge in promoting respect and inclusivity rather than sowing discord.

Dela Rosa apologized in response to growing criticism, acknowledging that he was overcome by passion and had not thought through the wider ramifications of his remarks.

Although he expressed regret for the hurt, many people think that a simple apology is insufficient; genuine change necessitates a dedication to comprehending and honoring people with disabilities.
