Bacolod Records Sharp Rise in HIV Cases, City Expands Response

Health authorities in Bacolod City have reported a significant increase in HIV cases, prompting the local government to intensify its public health initiatives.

Jonathan Diaz, head of the city’s HIV/AIDS awareness program, said the total number of persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reached 1,708 as of September 2025. This marks an increase of 396 cases from the 1,312 recorded in July 2025. The figure is cumulative since 1995, during which 264 deaths have been recorded, based on data from the Department of Health.

Diaz attributed the rise to a more aggressive information campaign and expanded access to free HIV testing in the city. He added that Bacolod’s role as an employment hub has contributed to the higher number of recorded cases.

In response, the city government is strengthening its programs. This week, Bacolod launched its HIV/AIDS Online Platform Services along with a school-based educational campaign aimed at increasing awareness and improving access to services for residents.

“Once fully operational, our online platform will provide Bacolodnons with convenient access to city health services such as medical assistance, free testing, and counseling, with assurance of full confidentiality, all just a tap away on a smartphone,” said Greg Gasataya in a social media post.

City officials also assured the public that there is an adequate supply of HIV testing kits provided by the DOH.

Since July 2025, the local government has rolled out awareness programs in public and private high schools, colleges, and private companies as part of its intensified campaign.

“If you are living with HIV/AIDS, know that you have an entire city that supports you. Let’s break the stigma and spread kindness and compassion,” the mayor added.
