Cyrille Payumo apologizes for wearing Catriona Gray’s iconic farewell gown
MANILA, Philippines - Miss Charm Philippines 2025 Cyrille Payumo has addressed pageant fans after wearing Catriona Gray’s iconic Mak Tumang-designed Reflection gown during her final walk as Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga.
Some fans expressed disappointment, believing the gown should remain exclusive to Catriona, who wore it during her farewell at Miss Universe 2019. Cyrille explained in a heartfelt statement on her Instagram account that Mak Tumang himself offered her the chance to wear the masterpiece, which left her feeling honored yet also aware of the mixed reactions.
Although her sole intention was to recognize her triumph and praise Mak Tumang's artistic abilities, Cyrille admitted in her apology statement that she understood how some could believe it overshadowed Catriona's legacy.
"I recognize that my actions may have unintentionally diminished the significance of Catriona Gray’s monumental achievements, and for that, I am deeply sorry," she wrote as she also expressed gratitude for the lesson learned, emphasizing that her intention was never to cause distress but to pay tribute to both the gown and its designer.
Mak Tumang, on his part, described the Reflection gown as symbolizing both strength and humility, drawing inspiration from the Philippine Eagle soaring above turquoise waters. He encouraged people to see the beauty within themselves, just as the gown reflects both power and grace.
Despite the controversy, Cyrille gracefully passed her crown to Krizza Gilliam Yco, marking the end of her reign while taking responsibility for the moment that stirred debate among pageant fans.
